Film Trailer Analysis - The Conjuring

The trailer for The Conjuring effectively catches the consumer's attention because right at the beginning we see the producer's logo, in this case it was the Warner Brothers logo. This was a successful move because Warner Bros is a hugely popular production company and has a very large audience as they produce films in various different genres. Knowing that the film is produced by such a massively successful company is a big plus for consumers as they know the capability of the company.

The first scene of the trailer consists of two of the main characters who are played by actors who have already been in previous horror movies which have done well in the box office. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play the role of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and have starred in the movies 'Insidious' and 'Orphan'. If any of the viewers have already watched the other two movies they may be more interested in this movie because it has the same actors therefore could also be as good if not better.

The trailer had technical codes to create fear amongst the audience through close ups at the climatic point of the trailer. This makes the audience feel like they are in that position as the close up makes the character's facial expressions more evident and the consumer starts to sympathise with them and imagine themselves at that position. They also zoomed in to the face of the evil spirit that was hovering over the mother while she lay on the bed. This directly shows the 'villain' of the film for the first time in the trailer and through the use of mise-en-scene, the film crew managed to make the face as frightening as possible to create fear.

During the climatic point sound is used when we hear very eery loud music which builds up the audiences emotions as the volume gets their adrenaline pumping. We also hear a lot of screams from the girls as they are afraid of the situation they are in again making the audience sympathise with the characters. Sound is one of the most effective things for any horror film.

This trailer definiteley makes the audience want to watch the film as it does not give too much away so the audience want to know if the characters manage to overcome the evil in their home.
