Radio Trailer for Amityville: The Awakening

As I could not find the perfect radio trailer for horror films I have decided to use the sound from the original video trailers without looking at it to analyse as a radio trailer.

The trailer for 'Amityville: The Awakening' starts of by challenging the conventions of horror trailers with slow, glum music instead of eerie music which suggests that the characters are not very happy at the beginning of the film. The first speech we hear is "Home sweet home" before another character expresses her dislike about the situation they are in. This indicates that a family have moved into a new home but not everyone is pleased with the shift. This may make the audience think 'we've seen it all before' as there are hundreds of other horror films out there that involve a family moving into a new haunted house.

However as the trailer goes on we hear the beeping of hospital equipments and heavy breathing. This could distress the consumers a little as they are not sure where the sound is coming from. There is a few seconds of silence to build up the tension and then suddenly we hear a gush of wind and a character lets out a frightened gasp. This makes the audience sympathise with the character because just like her, they do not know what to expect at this point.

All of a sudden loud eerie music plays which makes the audience want to know what is going on. Then the hospital beeps continue to let the audience know that it has something to do with James who was mentioned at the beginning about being ill.

This is a very effective way of persuading people to watch the film as it leaves the consumers hanging as the do not know the whole background story of the film so they will go to watch the movie to find out what happens to the characters.
The use of silence really helped build up the fearful atmosphere because right after a period of silence a loud sound effect was played to make the consumers jump, which is what everyone expects from a horror film.

This definitely made me want to go watch this film, what about you?
